Budgeting 101: Hidden Costs of Studying Abroad

Published by TawjiHelp Team

Many students calculate tuition and rent, but forget the hidden costs that can drain a bank account quickly. Here is what you need to prepare for.

1. The Blocked Account (Compte Bloqué)

For many visas (especially Germany and Spain), you must prove you have money by freezing a large sum (often €10,000+) in a special bank account before you leave. This money is released to you monthly.

2. Health Insurance

In France, "Sécurité Sociale" is free for students, but a top-up "Mutuelle" is recommended. In the USA, health insurance is mandatory and can cost $2,000+ per year.

3. Initial Setup Costs

Don't forget the "landing costs":

  • Apartment deposit (usually 1-2 months' rent)
  • Buying winter clothes if moving to a cold climate
  • Textbooks (can be very expensive in the US/UK)
"Pro Tip: Always carry your student ID. Student discounts on transport and museums can save you hundreds of Euros a year."
